Travelling to the Indian Subcontinent

When Learning Calls Across the Sea:

On May 5, 2025, I was given the chance to enrol in the **PRESTIJ 2025 Programme with study leave. Four months have flown by in Kuala Lumpur, and as of today, Maulidur Rasul, that period is officially over. The Indian Subcontinent is home to Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and tomorrow, my colleagues and I will be flying there.

I do feel a little heavy-hearted leaving my beloved wife and family back in Malaysia for a while. Still, I believe this journey of learning will bring something meaningful not just for me, but also for our country.

This blog has been virtually nonexistent for some time, "dah bersawang," as we call it in Bahasa Melayu. Now, I'm getting back into the swing of things with my writing, this time documenting my adventures in India. Maybe this is only the beginning of a long series of postings.

After that, I'll be heading to Chennai; I'm looking forward to experiencing all that this gem of Tamil Nadu has to offer!

Walking in the Shadows of History: Where There Was Bijaya Nagaram:

When I was a teenager, I read and explored Hikayat Hang Tuah. A particularly memorable part for me was a letter written by the Sultan of Melaka to the ruler of Bijaya Nagaram, located in modern-day Tamil Nadu, India. Over the waves, the Bendahara's words bore the burden of camaraderie, desire, and diplomacy.

Excerpt

It transported me back in time to a realm of fabled knights, envoys, and courtly letters.  I never in a million years thought that I would be the one to walk down that historical path, towards the same country that our classical literature praised.

I can't help but think of that link now as I get ready to go to Chennai.  A tale from a long-lost manuscript is now a part of my own history.  In the same way that Melaka's envoys sailed the seas in search of wisdom and connections to faraway places, I am now crossing the skies in pursuit of knowledge. Though our paths differ—sea for them, sky for me—the spirit of seeking and returning with something of value to Malaysia remains the same.

Kalaulah cukup ilmu di dada,
Banyak negeri dapat ditempuh;
Kalaulah hidup mahu bekerja,
Anak isteri dapat berteduh.
